Rwandan rapper, poet, and singer-songwriter Angell Mutoni is set to headline this year’s Hip Hop Asili Festival, taking place June 27 and 28 at TASUBA College of Arts in Bagamoyo, Tanzania. The festival has evolved into one of East Africa’s premier celebrations of hip-hop culture. Mutoni, celebrated for her blend of poetic Afro-Hip Hop, soulful R&B, and pop, has become one of Rwanda’s most compelling artistic voices. Her performances weave music and spoken word into deeply personal explorations of identity, womanhood, and resilience. Joining her onstage will be Tanzanian rapper Wakazi, a household name known for his bilingual flow and thoughtful lyricism. Often referred to as the “Bilingual Beast,” Wakazi fuses English and Swahili to deliver socially aware storytelling rooted in personal experience. He’s also known for his high-energy live shows, often performed with a full band. In addition to his live set, Mirsa will serve as judge for the festival’s highly anticipated Beatbox Battle. The two-day festival will include live performances, workshops, and cultural exchanges that center hip hop as a form of expression, empowerment, and dialogue. It attracts artists, producers, and fans from across the region and beyond, continuing to position Bagamoyo as a growing creative hub in East Africa’s hip hop scene.
